This following video is from Glenn Beck's television program on Fox News. In this clip, Beck says that "education is not a right, it's a privilege." The video speaks for itself. However, I will add a personal note regarding someone I know who is a Beck viewer.
I have a cousin who watches Glenn Beck. This past year, his daughter was applying to college. The family was pulling their hair out, trying to come up with financing. They ended up getting over $20,000 in financial aid. If not for that aid, my cousin's daughter would never have attended the college of her choice, and probably would not have attended college at all.
I do not discuss Glenn Beck with my cousin. However, I am very curious what he would think of Beck's comment that education "is a privilege" for students who "earn it." (How many students do you know who earn $30,000 a year?)
If you assume that Glenn Beck meant that students "earn it" by getting an academic or athletic scholarship, what about the vast majority of students who do not? What Beck is suggesting is that students who cannot afford college, or do not get scholarships, should be denied a college education. That is essentially a caste system, regulating a vast number of people in the USA to second class citizenship.
I find it ironic that my cousin, who can not afford his own daughter's tuition, and accepts financial aid from the government, is lapping up Glenn Beck's remarks...saying his daughter shouldn't be able to go to college.
Actually, this goes beyond irony into the realm of insanity.
The most sickening thing about Glenn Beck are the morons who watch him. They are so ignorant, they don't even realize his views are in opposition to their own self-interest.
On the other hand, Glenn Beck's livelihood depends on the ignorance of his viewers. He certainly has an interest in perpetuating it.
"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public." It is amazing that H. L. Mencken, who was responsible for that quote, never knew Glenn Beck.
